Question 1

What are hand sanitisers and why are they important in healthcare?

Accepted Answer

Hand sanitisers are alcohol-based or antimicrobial solutions used to quickly reduce microbial load on hands when handwashing is not immediately possible. In healthcare, they are critical for supporting infection prevention, reducing the spread of pathogens, and maintaining clean clinical environments between patient interactions.

Question 2

How do hand sanitisers complement handwashing?

Accepted Answer

Sanitisers provide rapid hygiene coverage when access to soap and water is limited or when speed is essential. While handwashing remains the gold standard for visibly soiled hands, sanitising supports compliance during frequent patient contacts or procedural sequences where time and convenience matter.

Question 3

What types of hand sanitisers are available for clinical use?

Accepted Answer

Common formulations include alcohol-based gels, foam sanitisers, and clinical-grade solutions designed for frequent use with skin-friendly moisturising ingredients. Each formulation supports antimicrobial activity, with alcohol-based options often offering broader spectrum efficacy.

Question 4

Are hand sanitisers suitable for sensitive skin?

Accepted Answer

Many modern clinical hand sanitisers incorporate moisturising components to reduce dryness and irritation associated with frequent use. Choosing formulations with skin-conditioning agents can help support staff comfort during regular application.

Question 5

Where should hand sanitisers be placed in a healthcare facility?

Accepted Answer

Strategic placement includes reception areas, waiting rooms, entry points, treatment zones, procedural suites, bedside stations and high-touch communal areas. Positioning sanitisers where they are visible and easily accessible encourages frequent use and improves compliance.

Question 6

How much hand sanitiser should be used per application?

Accepted Answer

Healthcare guidelines generally recommend applying enough sanitiser to completely cover hands and rubbing until dry. This ensures sufficient contact time for antimicrobial activity and supports effective pathogen reduction.

Question 7

Can hand sanitisers reduce the spread of infections?

Accepted Answer

Hand sanitisers help lower microbial loads on hands and can reduce the risk of pathogen transmission when used consistently as part of hand hygiene protocols, especially in conjunction with other infection control practices.

Question 8

Are hand sanitiser dispensers easy to maintain?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Most dispensers are designed for easy refilling and cleaning. Regular checks of refill levels, dispenser mechanisms and surface hygiene help ensure that units remain functional and accessible throughout clinical operations.

Question 9

Can hand sanitisers be used outside clinical areas?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. Hand sanitisers are valuable in waiting areas, reception zones, cafeterias, staff break rooms, entrances and other shared spaces where hand hygiene supports general safety and cleanliness.

Question 10

Are hand sanitisers safe for children and elderly patients?

Accepted Answer

Hand sanitisers are generally safe when used as intended, but supervision may be needed for children and some elderly patients to ensure safe application and avoid accidental ingestion or misuse.

Question 11

How often should hand sanitiser stations be refilled?

Accepted Answer

Stations should be checked daily in high-use areas and refilled before they run empty. Consistent monitoring supports uninterrupted hygiene access and prevents moments where hand hygiene may be compromised.

Question 12

Are hand sanitisers regulated in Australia?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Clinical sanitisers should comply with healthcare-grade standards and regulatory expectations for antimicrobial activity and safety. Choosing products from trusted suppliers helps ensure compliance with relevant guidelines.

Question 13

Can hand sanitisers irritate skin with frequent use?

Accepted Answer

Some formulations, especially those with higher alcohol content, can dry skin if moisturising agents are not included. Choosing sanitisers with skin-conditioning ingredients and encouraging hydration can help reduce irritation.

Question 14

What should I do if hand sanitiser causes irritation?

Accepted Answer

Discontinue use temporarily and consult healthcare guidance for skin-friendly alternatives. Using moisturisers after clinical shifts can also help restore skin condition.

Question 15

Can hand sanitisers be purchased in bulk?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Many healthcare facilities order hand sanitisers in bulk to ensure steady supply levels, support routine workflows, and avoid stockouts in high-traffic areas.
